Keep Stone Tidy had a stall at the Stone Lion's Fun Day on Westbridge Park.
We raised some funds for the campaign by having a tombola!
We also helped tidy up after the event.....luckily there wasn't much rubbish.

The Keep Stone Tidy Campaign had a stall on Westbridge Park on Carnival Saturday.
The purpose of having a stall was to publicise the campaign and to raise some funds via a tombola.
During the day, various members of the team collected 3 bags of litter in order to keep it clean for the thousands of visitors that attended.
At the end of the event, Keep Stone Tidy volunteers joined in with the various other individuals and groups to litter pick the whole area and collected a further 7 bags between them!
That was just 10 of many!!

Keep Stone Tidy finally got the opportunity to perform a litter pick on Westbridge Park.
The previous planned event in February had to be cancelled at the last minute, due to a heavy snowfall over night!
Even though only 10 volunteers turned today, we managed to litter pick Westbridge Park, Scotch Brook and the Crown Meadow.
20 bags were collected in two hours.

I just though I'd let you know that I collected seven bags of litter this
morning.
This was all from the lanes between the canal, Barlaston Road, the ford at the Downs Banks and the top entrance to Stone Common. I last did a big pick in this area way back in the Autumn and I was pleased to see that the verges, in my opinion, weren't too bad.
We pick up a lot of obvious stuff on a day-to-day basis whilst cycling home from work, but it was good to get some deeper stuff cleared out of the hedges. In addition to the usual food wrappers and bottles, I collected a lot of shattered plastic and glass which was the debris from several collisions on the icy roads of the past winter.
Unfortunately, the stretch of Barlaston Road from the A34 towards the
Lakeside Tavern remains a dreadful mess, although the Spring growth covers
much of the small stuff. I'll maybe have a go at that road at some time over the
next few months.
But some good news: despite being heavily used, Stone Common and the Downs Banks
remain almost litter free. I don't know who keeps them tidy, but it is a joy to
walk in these areas. We pick up the odd sweet wrapper when we're out with our
dogs, but it is interesting to see that it really is possible to have big areas
of countryside clean and free from the litter plague.

The Stone Lions have recently resumed their regular weekly litter picks. They cover the Car Park, Amphitheatre, Picnic Area, Canal Tow Path from the Star to the Old Hospital, the bridge over the Canal into Crown Street and the Crown Meadow area. Each of the 31 Lions has a weekly slot and they collect between 1 and 2 bags per week!

What an amazing turnout of volunteers for the first litter pick!
Between 35 - 40 people participated in what turned out to be a very successful day.
It was hard to get a precise figure as people just kept showing up.
The rain stayed away and we managed to collect 40 bags of rubbish in two hours.
Keep Stone Tidy are grateful for all of the volunteers that participated today, but would like to give special thanks to the following people.
Kerry Bush and her volunteers from The Den & Andy Whitehall and his volunteers from The Right Stuff, who provided over a dozen volunteers between them.
Thanks to Jill Hood (Town Mayor) and Councillor Richard Stevens for taking time out of their busy schedules to help out.
Thanks also to Mark & Kristan Green who represented The Stone Lions.
A special thanks to all of the people who went beyond the call of duty and tackled the particularly bad spots on the Canal, Whitebridge Lane and the area opposite the BP garage.

After months of planning and preparation, the first litter pick organised by Keep Stone Tidy had to be cancelled.
4 inches of snow fell overnight and for Health & Safety reasons, the decision was made to cancel the event and reschedule to a later date.
The event will now take place on either March 27th or 28th (date to be confirmed).
Hopefully by then the weather will be more settled!

Keep Stone Tidy in the Newsletter!!

Stone residents concerned about mounting
rubbish in the town have taken matters into their own hands by forming a
litter picking group. Keep Stone Tidy aims to boost town pride by organising monthly or bi-monthly litter picks in Crown Meadow, Westbridge Park, Aston Lodge and Whitebridge Manor. The group is the brainchild of Aston Lodge resident Annmarie Wherton, who was involved in a community litter pick with partner Craig Whitehurst in 2008. She is also assisted by Jason Perry, who is coordinating the group’s website on which they aim to publish details of how much rubbish they collect. The first Keep Stone Tidy litter pick is being held at Westbridge Park on February 21 and more volunteers are being sought to swell the ranks. Ms Wherton is also contacting community groups for assistance and has invited any organisations who can assist with funding for equipment to get in touch. |
||
She said: “Since the community litter pick, my partner and I have continued with an almost weekly litter pick whilst walking the dog around Westbridge Park, Crown Meadow, along the canal and the play areas on the Aston Lodge estate".
"These areas are consistently used as social drinking areas and as a result are frequently littered with cans, take-away wrappers and alcohol bottles - many of which are broken and cause a potential hazard to children, dogs and other wildlife".
"Both my partner and I feel that any time that we can spare to solve the littering problem is time well spent".
"The winter months are the ideal time to get on top of the mounting litter, as the undergrowth hides the true extent of the littering problem during the summer months and also makes it difficult to retrieve. On average we collect two to three bags of litter from each site each weekend, which we then take to either the Stone or Stafford refuse sites".
"Keep Stone Tidy has already been welcomed
by Richard Stevens from Stone in Bloom, Stone Mayor Jill Hood and Stafford
Borough Council".
Councillor Stan Highfield, cabinet member for environment and health, said:
“It is always great to hear of people who really care about their community
and do their bit to ensure it is something we can all be proud of".
Anyone who would like to help at the Westbridge Park litter pick on February 21, which starts at 11am, should visit www.keepstonetidy.co.uk for more information.

Its Tuesday 2nd of February and the litter on Crown Meadow is visible from the canal and car park.
So while the dog stretches his legs, I though it would be a good opportunity to see how bad it really was!
Not even half way around and I had managed to fill a large rubble sack, but this was only the start of things. Under the trees close to the rivers edge were at least 20 - 30 beer cans, with the cardboard containers and the carrier bags that they were bought in. However, I made good use of the carrier bags to gather the remaining plastic bottles, sandwich wrappers and crisp packets.
I think the dog got a little bored with being ignored, so he decided to go for a little swim, followed by a run around the meadow with another dog. The owner commented how this is a never ending problem and expressed his concerns over the amount of rubbish that is beginning to accumulate along the canal.
Once I had managed to drag the dog away from his new playmate, I returned to the car for a few extra rubble sacks and returned to collect the rest of the easily retrievable litter. It looks so much better already, so it was definitely worth an hours hard work, even though I didn't have enough time or pairs of hands to retrieve all of the litter from the area.
Anyway, I thought it was only fair to leave a little behind for those of you who wish to volunteer on February 21st!
Its amazing what you can achieve when you really put your mind to it.
